15 Budget-Friendly Europe Honeymoon Spots

A European honeymoon doesn’t have to cost a small fortune—though the travel industry would very much like you to believe otherwise. With the right destinations, a little flexibility on dates, and some willingness to step off the well-worn tourist trail, Europe delivers romance at every price point.

Here is a list of 15 budget-friendly European honeymoon spots that prove romance and fiscal responsibility can absolutely coexist.

Porto, Portugal

Porto is one of Europe’s best-value cities for couples, full stop. Azulejo-tiled buildings, port wine tastings that cost a few euros, long dinners for two at a fraction of what you’d pay in Lisbon, and the Douro River running right through the middle of it all.

It’s romantic without trying too hard, which is arguably the best kind of romantic.

Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s second city is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and one of its least touristy. Plovdiv’s old town is a maze of Ottoman-era houses, cobblestone streets, and art galleries—all of it essentially free to explore.

Dinner for two with wine runs around $20, and hotels in the old town are genuinely charming for very little money.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is compact, walkable, architecturally gorgeous, and significantly cheaper than neighboring Austria and Italy. The old town clusters around a castle hill, the Ljubljanica River winds through the center, and the whole city is laced with outdoor café terraces perfect for slow, lingering afternoons.

Slovenia’s wine regions and Lake Bled are easy day trips.

Kotor, Montenegro

Kotor sits inside medieval walls at the foot of a mountain, on the edge of a fjord-like bay that’s often described as the Mediterranean’s most dramatic coastline. Montenegro is one of Europe’s cheapest countries—accommodation, food, and wine are all remarkably affordable, yet the scenery competes with the Amalfi Coast at a fraction of the price.

Kraków, Poland

Kraków’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Central Europe’s most beautiful city centers—all of it largely free to wander. The food and drink scene is excellent and absurdly cheap by Western European standards.

Add a day trip to the Tatra Mountains and another to Wieliczka Salt Mine, and you have a proper honeymoon itinerary for very little budget.

The Algarve, Portugal

Portugal’s southern coast offers some of Europe’s most dramatic beach scenery—golden limestone cliffs, sea caves, turquoise water—at prices well below Spain’s Costa del Sol. Lagos and Tavira are particularly good bases, with markets, fresh seafood restaurants, and a laid-back pace that suits a honeymoon perfectly.

Villas and guesthouses are notably affordable outside July and August.

Seville, Spain

Seville is one of Spain’s most romantic cities, but it’s considerably cheaper than Barcelona or Madrid. Tapas culture means eating well for very little money—a glass of wine and a couple of tapas can cost under $5 in a local bar.

The Alcázar, the Cathedral, and the Barrio Santa Cruz neighborhood are free or very cheap to explore.

Tbilisi, Georgia

Georgia is one of Europe’s best-kept budget secrets. Tbilisi’s old town is full of sulfur bathhouses, balconied wooden houses, Orthodox churches, and one of the world’s most interesting wine cultures—Georgia has been making wine in clay pots for 8,000 years.

Accommodation and food are extraordinarily inexpensive, and the scenery across the country is dramatic.

Ohrid, North Macedonia

Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, and the town on its shores is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Byzantine churches, medieval fortresses, and traditional Ottoman-era houses. It’s barely on most tourists’ radar, which means prices remain genuinely low.

A waterfront dinner watching the sun set over the lake costs almost nothing.

Valletta, Malta

Malta’s capital is tiny—you can walk across it in 20 minutes—but it packs in an extraordinary concentration of Baroque architecture, sea views, and history for a very small island. Malta uses the euro but remains cheaper than most of Western Europe, and the island’s warmth, seafood, and festive culture make it a genuinely romantic destination.

Crete, Greece

While Santorini and Mykonos have become genuinely expensive, Crete remains affordable relative to its appeal. Greece’s largest island has gorges, ancient ruins, mountain villages, and excellent beaches, spread across an island big enough to reward exploration.

Stay outside the resort towns and eat at family-run tavernas, and a week’s honeymoon there costs a fraction of the famous island alternatives.

Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled is frequently cited as one of Europe’s most beautiful lake scenes—an island church, a clifftop castle, Julian Alps rising behind it—and it’s accessible to most budgets if you plan ahead. Slovenia is not as cheap as Bulgaria or North Macedonia, but it’s far more affordable than Switzerland or Austria, and the setting is comparable.

Sintra, Portugal

Sintra is technically a day trip from Lisbon, but staying there overnight means experiencing the palaces and gardens without the daytime crowds. Colorful 19th-century royal palaces emerge from misty forests above the Atlantic coast, and the whole place has a slightly fairy-tale quality that makes it an unexpectedly dreamy honeymoon base.

Split, Croatia

Dubrovnik gets the headlines, but Split offers Croatia’s history and coastline at lower prices. The old town is built inside a 4th-century Roman palace—people have been living inside Diocletian’s Palace walls for 1,700 years—and the surrounding islands are easily accessible by ferry.

The Dalmatian coast is stunning, and Split gives you access to most of it.

Transylvania, Romania

Transylvania is a real, beautiful, and underrated destination in Europe. The medieval Saxon villages, fortified churches, mountain scenery, and the castle that may or may not have been the inspiration for a certain vampire novel—Bran Castle—are all compelling.

Romania is one of the cheapest countries in Europe, and Transylvania offers romance, atmosphere, and incredible value.

The most romantic moments of your honeymoon will not be in the most expensive locations—they will be when you discover something unexpected, when the food is simple and perfect, when the view is better than the picture suggested. Europe’s budget destinations offer all of the above and more.
