Portland breweries locals actually visit

Portland may call itself “Beervana,” but tourists often hit the same handful of famous spots while locals quietly nurse pints at their neighborhood favorites. These aren’t the breweries with the biggest marketing budgets or the flashiest Instagram presence—they’re the places where regulars know the bartenders’ names and weekend waits feel like community gatherings rather than tourist traps.

Here are 16 Portland breweries where locals actually spend their beer money, from hidden gems tucked into converted warehouses to neighborhood stalwarts that have earned their devoted followings a perfect pint at a time.

Great Notion Brewing

Great Notion is arguably one of the best breweries in the country, with three taprooms in the Portland area, and each location has a slightly different tap list. The Alberta location started it all. Locals pack this place for their legendary hazy IPAs and creative flavor combinations that somehow always work.

The murals at the NW location are worth a visit on their own. But don’t sleep on the Beaverton spot either.

Baerlic Brewing

Baerlic is one of the most reliable breweries in Portland, and they always have an interesting selection. Locals can’t get enough of these brews, made evident by the long lines and happy chatter at the brewpubs. Three locations mean you’re never far from their stellar IPAs. The original pub pairs perfectly with Ranch PDX pizza.

And honestly? Their helles, Chill, is a true Portland classic.

Grand Fir Brewing

Grand Fir was the most anticipated brewery opening in 2022—on the first day, a line of eager customers formed outside the business long before the doors were unlocked. Founded by brewmaster Whitney Burnside and chef Doug Adams, this family-owned neighborhood pub combines award-winning beer with refined yet familiar food.

Located on SE Stark Street across from Revolution Hall, Grand Fir offers a multi-level floor plan adorned with old-growth fir and a live bluegrass picking circle every week. The PNW meets East Texas vibe draws locals who appreciate both the hoppy ales and European-style lagers.

Wayfinder Beer

Wayfinder Beer is another massive success for the masterminds behind Sizzle Pie, Podnah’s Pit BBQ, and Double Mountain Brewery. Self-proclaimed “proselytizers of cool fermentation,” Wayfinder goes above and beyond to craft the best lagers around. Their massive patio draws locals who appreciate both the full food menu and the dedication to traditional European brewing techniques with a Pacific Northwest twist.

Still, it’s hard to remember what Portland did before it opened in 2016.

Occidental Brewing

Located in North Portland, Occidental has killer views of the most beautiful bridge in the city, the St. Johns Bridge. There are lots of excellent breweries in Portland, but Occidental continues to be my favorite! Founded in 2011 to craft well-balanced continental-style brews in Portland, Occidental has garnered a loyal following.

The Hefeweizen here deserves special mention. Euro-inspired but distinctly Portland.

Upright Brewing

Upright Brewing is a hidden treasure tucked inside an old historic building turned creative workspace. Jazz played softly in the background, and the whole place had a calm, mellow vibe perfect for winding down after work. Locals appreciate the sophisticated approach to farmhouse ales and saisons.

Not flashy. Just exceptional beer in a space that encourages lingering.

Gigantic Brewing

No other brewery in town has worn Portland’s badge of bizarreness as loudly and proudly as Gigantic. From bold and kaleidoscopic label art to its beer series paying tribute to local personalities, founders Ben Love and Van Havig have established a distinctive and beloved brand. There’s a huge outdoor space, funky art everywhere, and even a barrel room that hosts events like drag shows.

Three locations now, but locals still flock to the original industrial spot. Each beer comes with its own artwork. Very Portland.

Ruse Brewing

Set in an industrial area, Ruse feels like a hidden gem with roots in the local beer scene. They got their start brewing out of Culmination and now have their own cozy, wood-accented space. The founders met while working at Culmination Brewing in Northeast Portland before branching off with a goal of brewing 20 barrels a month.

Their Florescent Farms series earns consistent local buzz. Pizza oven on-site. BYOF (bring your own food) policy creates a neighborhood feel.

Stormbreaker Brewing

Stormbreaker is a crowd-favorite among Portlanders. Founded in 2013, this beloved Portland brewery has two locations: North Mississippi Avenue and downtown St. Johns. The pandemic turned their outdoor seating into a local institution. Both locations maintain that community gathering place vibe that keeps regulars coming back.

Don’t skip the nachos. Two locations mean you’re covered whether you’re on Mississippi or in St. Johns.

Migration Brewing

Spacious and lively, Migration Brewing is a great stop for solid craft beer and tasty bites. Offerings at North Williams Avenue’s Migration Brewing include the hoppy, juicy Straight Outta Portland IPA and the slightly sweet Proper Pilsner. Multiple locations across Portland mean locals can find their fix wherever they are.

The rooftop taproom in Southwest Portland offers some of the city’s best brewery views.

Level Beer

Level Beer brings together great brews, nostalgic arcade games, and a chill hangout vibe. With both indoor and outdoor seating (don’t miss the greenhouse), this spot is a community favorite. Located near the airport but beloved by locals for the rotating food truck lineup and first-come-first-serve approach that keeps things casual.

Perfect for post-waterfall visits along the Columbia River Gorge.

Breakside Brewery

Breakside could be one of the most critically acclaimed breweries of the bunch. Breakside’s history includes gold medals at the GABF and a place on Men’s Journal’s “Best Beers in the World” list. Why do I consider Breakside Brewery one of the best breweries in Portland? It’s all about the numbers. Breakside has been nationally recognized for its mad skill.

Critics love them, but locals love them more. The Dekum location’s garage doors and extensive seating make it a neighborhood anchor.

Von Ebert Brewing

There’s been a fermentation-tank-size hole in the heart of the Pearl District ever since Von Ebert shuttered its flagship pub in the spring of 2024. But now, with its new monolithic brewery in Ecliptic’s former facility just off N Mississippi, Von Ebert has ramped up production. Hands down one of Portland’s best IPAs, Volatile Substance tastes as if brewmaster Sam Pecoraro and his team shoved a spigot into a pine tree and fermented its juices.

New location, same exceptional beer. Locals followed them from Pearl to Mississippi without missing a beat.

Lucky Labrador Brewing

Lucky Labrador has been an iconic Portland experience since 1994. Dog lovers rejoice in the brews and bites at Lucky Labrador Beer Hall, while the original Hawthorne location maintains that casual brewpub feel in an old timbered warehouse. Three locations across Portland mean locals can always find their neighborhood Lab.

Dogs are welcome on the outside patios. The Beer Hall location features a five-ton crane hovering above the tables in the old Freightliner warehouse. Cheap but good food, great beer, and that truly Portland vibe.

Little Beast Brewing

While you can find the original taproom in Clackams, OR, Little Beast has a beautiful beer garden in Portland that can’t be missed. Drink incredible beers on a front porch like you’re in someone’s home. Their wild fermentation program produces beers that taste like no one else’s. The Portland beer garden feels like drinking at a friend’s house.

That’s exactly the magic locals have been seeking.

Away Days Brewing

The font of Portland’s current cask-ale boom, Away Days is a small brewery focused on classic English styles. That includes the kinds of modern ales craft breweries are making in the UK, with lush base malts and expressive yeasts along with modern hops and hopping techniques. While most Portland breweries chase the latest trends, Away Days quietly perfects traditional British pub ales.

Locals appreciate the commitment to cask conditioning and proper cellar temperature.

Zoiglhaus Brewing

German-trained Alan Taylor is one of the city’s best lager brewers, and has a GABF gold for Zoiglhaus’s flagship North German-style pilsner. The brewery is a showcase for clean, delicious lagers and German styles. Originally a German restaurant and brewery, the space now hosts a handful of food vendors, including Thai and Venezuelan options.

Located on SE 92nd, it’s a trek from the central brewery districts. But locals make the journey for some of the city’s most authentic German-style lagers.

Where the locals really drink

Portland’s brewery scene continues evolving, with new spots opening and longtime favorites adapting to changing times. But these 16 represent the places where locals have voted with their wallets and their weekend plans.
